I ship my own characters but the pairings are non-canon because that’s not how the story unfolds

Something is wrong with my thinking process as a writer

Actually I’ve done this, as a weird character exercise. I wrote “fanfiction” for my original work that paired different characters together. Why? I wanted to write the characters out to make sure I wasn’t writing them “for” that other character in the original story. Like… I wanted to make sure they were well-rounded and writing them outside of their canon coupling actually really helped. It’s a dumb trick, maybe, but it helped SO MUCH.
